Painless Dentist Upstairs

I went to the dentist the other day and I have to have some work done. I have a lot of fillings and a couple of them are cracked and I have two small new cavities. Darn my sweet tooth! I'll admit I don't floss as much as I should. Getting this dental work reminded me of when I got all those fillings. When I was 10 years old I hadn't been to the dentist in 3 years because my dad's job changed insurances and we weren't covered. So when he got the new insurance my Mom took us all to the dentist which was in walking distance from our house. When we got there, there was a wooden sign in the waiting room that said, "Painless Dentist Upstairs" with an arrow pointing up. I remember thinking I wished my mom had made an appointment for that dentist. It took me a few visits before I realized that it was a joke. Anyway, at this first visit, the dentist checked my teeth and I had 16 cavities. My mom and I were both shocked! I was the kid that brushed my teeth all the time and really didn't eat that much candy. My brothers, on the other hand, never brushed their teeth and ate candy all the time. My mom asked the doctor why this would happen to me and he simply said that some peoples saliva creates more cavities. When we left the office my mom cried telling my dad the news. She felt that it was their fault for not getting me to the dentist sooner. I always took care of my teeth diligently after that and really didn't have much problem since. When I took my son to the dentist he had 6 cavities and of course I felt terrible! My husband blamed me, because I am the one that allows them to have candy. I think he inherited my teeth.
